Elements are substances that can’t be broken up further by chemical means. Other substances are composed of elements in the same way that words are composed of the letters of the alphabet. And that is also how they got their name! The Etruscan alphabet does not begin with ABC, but with LMN, thus the Latin name 'elementum'!
